Groundhogs are known to whistle when alarmed or counting a mate. This is why they are sometimes known as “whistle Pigs.” Groundhogs hibernate each year. This means that they enter a coma, allowing their body temperature to fall to a few degrees above freezing. During this time their heart beats slowly and their breathing nearly comes to a stop.

Groundhog Day takes place annually at 7:25 a.m. EST on Feb.2 in Punxsutawney, Pa Phil is placed in a heated burrow underneath a simulated tree stump before being pulled out by the tuxedo-clad members of the mysterious “Inner Circle.”
