Drug Addiction in Illinois: The Statistics and Where to Get Help

0 Flares 0 Flares ×

Drug addiction continues to be a major problem in Illinois and other parts of the United States. 2020 saw a devastating rise in opioid-related overdoses and deaths across the state of Illinois, with 2,900 reported cases – an alarming 33% increase from 2019. Synthetic opioids were found to be especially problematic as overdose-related ER visits rose a staggering 80% since 2013. This public health crisis compromises people from all backgrounds; however, research indicates that communities of color are most impacted by this epidemic coupled with men accounting for 72.4 %of opioid overdose hospitalizations throughout 2020 alone.

Overdoses can be especially scary and dangerous. It is important to spot the signs of an overdose so you can get help immediately. If you recognize any of these symptoms in a loved one or someone else, call 9-11 immediately: Blue or purple fingernails, unresponsive to touch/sound, slowed breathing, slowed heart rate, clammy or pale skin.

With these stats, it is no wonder that many people, unfortunately, don’t end up getting the treatment they need and deserve.
