Esports: Real Sports or Not?

What do you think is a sport? Is it an activity that requires physical exertion?

Then what about golf? It’s a sport that relies more on hand-eye coordination than athleticism. You aim then you swing. You don’t even need to run as there are caddies that you can ride to the next hole.

Now consider esports—consider video gaming. Do you think it’s a true sport?

Consider: Pro gamers extensively train their hand dexterity and reaction speed to be able to compete at even the qualifying phases of most esport tournaments.

Consider: The League of Legends 2017 World Finals saw 57.60 million online viewers, almost thrice as many as that of the NBA 2017 Finals, which had 19.4 million viewers from around the world.

Consider: Despite these facts and more, there are still skeptics on the legitimacy of esport as a true sport.
