The roots of the tiny house movement span back to Thoreau’s Walden, which was published in 1854. Lester Walker published an important work in 1987 promoting the tiny house movement. The 2008 Great Recession left scars in the psyche of many people who lost their homes or faced other economic hardship. With greater awareness of living an ecologically friendly lifestyle and a need to save money many people changed their views of what winning meant and what a stable lifestyle is by moving away from McMansions to moving into smaller dwellings.

Homeownership rates have fallen as more people have become renters & some people have decided to save even more by shifting from paying rent to buying a tiny home outright. Tiny homes allow them to take their home on the road with them and give them greater economic and personal freedom, allowing them to travel the country and move as they see fit.
